INDIAN RAILWAYS – AIR BRAKE CYLINDER

AIR BRAKE CYLINDER

DESCRIPTION

This brake cylinder is simple and robust in construction. Maintenance is easy and economical. The cylinder can be mounted in four different planes. The push rod can be removed easily. A greased felt piston rod packaging at the front end round the hollows piston trunk provides lubrication to the moving parts for long periods and also prevents dirt and moisture from entering into the cylinder. The cylinder cover is provided with a replacement strainer to prevent ingress of dirt inside the cylinder during the release stroke.

OPERATION

When compressed air is supplied to the cylinder, the lip of the piston head disc is flared outwards pressing the same on the wall of the cylinder body. The piston assembly moves out wards compressing the release spring the push rod is moved outwards by the piston hard.  During release stroke, when air pressure is released from the piston head the  spring expands and moves the piston assembly inwards. The push rod, fixed by a pin with piston trunk also moves inwards.

The Maximum working stroke of the brake cylinder is “5”
