INDIAN RAILWAYS – RELEASE OF AN INDEPENDENT BRAKE APPLICATION

RELEASE OF AN INDEPENDENT BRAKE APPLICATION

When  the brake valve handle is moved towards “Release” Position the regulating cam dog allows the combined regulating valve spring and exhaust valve spring tension to move the inlet  valve assembly towards the release position, carrying the double ball valve assembly with is, thus unseating the exhaust while remaining seated at the inlet seat. Graduated release of brake cylinder pressure will be in proportion to the movement of the brake valve be in proportion to the movement of the brake valve handle. When the force acting across the diaphragm equalize, the brake valve will assume a ‘Lap’ position.

When the brake valve handle is moved to the “Release” Position the inlet valve assembly will move to its furthest travel from the regulating valve diaphragm. The ball valve will be unseated at the exhaust while remaining seated at the inlet valve. Air pressure in the application and release pipe will flow to exhaust, which will in turn pilot the release of brake cylinder pressure on the locomotive.
